Three Skin Layers

Your skin is made up of 3 layers. Every layer has a different function. Keeping your skin healthy will keep will keep the three skin layers functioning very well.

The first and the outermost layer is the epidermis. This consists mainly of cells called keratinocytes, made from protein keratin (also the material in hair and nails). Although the epidermis is the thinnest skin layer, it has an important role. Epidermis can protect your body from the harsh environment.

Besides keratinocytes, epidermis is made up of other cells. Keratinocytes produces keratin, the protein of the main component of the epidermis. The second cell, melanocytes produces your skin pigment known as melanin. The other cell is Langerhans cells which will help to alert the body’s immune system to viruses and other infectious agents.

The second layer is dermis. This layer gives the skin its strength and elasticity. Dermis, which has fibers of collagen and elastin, is responsible for wrinkles. It consists of blood vessels, hair follicles, and glands which all have important role for the body.

The blood vessels in dermis help regulate body temperature. A network of nerve fibers and receptors will send the response to the brain when they pick up feelings such as touch, temperature, and pain. Sweat glands bring down internal temperature through perspiration. Apocrine glands, which are developed during puberty, can produce body odor. Oil glands will secrete oil-like sebum to lubricate the hair and skin.

The third layer is subcutis. This layer includes a seam of fat as a fuel reserve in case of food shortage. Subcutis is responsible for conserving body’s heat and protecting vital inner organs. The damage of this layer can cause your skin to sag as well as wrinkle.
